Proclaiming Christ

SINCE 1952

While serving as pastor of Troy’s Southside Baptist Church, W. M. Bush had a vision of planting a church in a growing area of town. Although he retired in 1950 before that dream became a reality, Rev. Bush’s vision was kept alive by the Reverend E. C. Glenn who followed him to the Southside pulpit. On the first Sunday of July 1950, twenty-two members of Southside Baptist Church began the mission that would become Bush Memorial Baptist Church on February 3, 1952. Through the years and changes, Bush has been a beacon of light to the community, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to Troy and to the ends of the earth.

BAPTIST STATEMENT OF FAITH

Our Beliefs

THE SCRIPTURES

We believe the entire Bible is the inspired Word of God and that men were moved by the Spirit of God to write the very words of Scripture. Therefore, we believe the Bible is without error.

GOD

We believe in one God who exists in three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus Christ is the second member of the Trinity (the Son of God) who became flesh to reveal God to man and to become the Savior of the lost world.

JESUS CHRIST

Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the God and the Holy Spirit. Jesus was born of the virgin Mary by miraculous conception, lived a sinless human life and offered himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days demonstrating His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven where He is the only mediator between God and people, and will return again to earth. He will reign as King of King and Lord of Lords.

THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is co-equal with God and Jesus. He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every follower of Jesus from the moment of Salvation. He provides the believer with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. He gives every believer spiritual gifts when they are saved. As believers we seek to live under His control.

MANKIND

We believe that mankind was created in the image of God to have fellowship with Him but became alienated in that relationship through sinful disobedience. As a result, man is incapable of regaining a right relationship with God through his own effort alone.

SALVATION

We believe that the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for the forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation occurs only when people place their faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as sufficient payment for their sin.

ETERNITY

People are created to exist forever. Every person will either exist eternally separated from God by sin or in union with God through forgiveness and salvation. To be eternally separated from God is Hell. To be eternally in union with Him is Heaven. Heaven and Hell are real places of eternal existence. Everyone will spend eternity somewhere.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

We believe that every follower of Jesus should live for Christ and not for himself. By obedience to the Word of God and daily yielding to the Spirit of God, every believer should mature and be conformed to the image of Christ.

THE CHURCH

We believe that the church is the body of Christ, of which Jesus Christ is the head. The members of the church are those who have trusted by faith the finished work of Christ. The purpose of the church is to glorify God by loving Him and by making Him known to the lost world.
